Questions buyers ask
How many watts do I need?
Add up the graphics card's and processor's power, then leave about 30–40% headroom: a mid-range build (RTX 5070 class, 8-core CPU) is comfortable on 750 W, a high-end one (RTX 5080 / 5090) on 850–1000 W or more. Each graphics card page on rtx.live and vga.live lists the maker's recommended power supply.
What does ATX 3.1 mean, and do I need 12V-2x6?
ATX 3.0 / 3.1 power supplies are built for the short power spikes of modern graphics cards and include a native 12V-2x6 (formerly 12VHPWR) cable for cards that use the 16-pin connector, such as the RTX 40 and 50 series. Older supplies work through adapters, but a native cable is tidier and simpler.
Is 80 PLUS Gold worth it over Bronze?
Gold units waste less power as heat (about 90% efficient at typical load versus 85%), run cooler and quieter, and usually come with better parts and longer warranties. For a PC that runs many hours a day the price difference often pays for itself.
Fully modular, semi-modular or non-modular?
Fully modular supplies let you attach only the cables you use, which helps airflow and small builds. Semi-modular keeps the motherboard and CPU cables fixed; non-modular has every cable attached.
ATX or SFX?
SFX and SFX-L are small power supplies for mini-ITX and compact cases; most SFX units fit ATX cases with a bracket. Check your case's supported form factor and maximum power supply length.
